The passive circuit is a circuit that does not have a power supply to make the device work. There is mainly 3 type of passive circuits. They are resistor, capacitor, and inductor. Passive circuit component has lots of benefits, they include;
1. Low power consumption.
The voltage on the passive circuit is only required to drive the signal without turning on power consumption. The current consumption of the chip must be very small. This is very important in mobile phones, batteries are critical components in mobile phones. The power consumption of the phone should not increase dramatically when you use more applications, for example; internet browsing and game playing.
2. Low heat generation
The passive circuit only requires a small amount of current that can be dissipated by a resistor or capacitor, which is between 10% to 20% or less than the value of input power. But if you use much more resources than that, it will cause heat generation, which leads to the device overheating and malfunctioning. Also, the passive circuit can only drive very low power at a time (1 mW), when it reaches a higher power it will generate more heat.
3. Small size
The smaller the size of the passive circuit is, the less inductance there is and the lower the input impedance. Therefore, if you can use smaller values for resistors and capacitors in your circuit design, you need less inductance and lower impedance of high-frequency signals to achieve the same performance as with larger values.
4. High immunity against low-frequency signals
The resistance of the passive component is usually very low, which means that high-frequency signals are not able to flow through them easily. But when it comes to the low-frequency signals (a few tens of Hz), they are easy to flow through. Therefore, passive components are able to block high-frequency signals but do not affect the low-frequency signals. This is especially useful in radio receivers and mobile phones.
5. Easy to manufacture
The passive circuitry can easily be placed on a circuit board and then connected by using cable connectors or soldered connection points. These are called PCB passive components. The process of adding these passive components into PCBs is called surface-mounting technology (SMT). Compared with through-hole technology (THT), this process does not require drilling holes but soldering on both sides of the board. The main advantage of SMT passive components is that the PCB has a higher density of components and lower cost.
6. Large variety of passive components
Due to the large variety, you can find almost all types of passive circuit components on the market. For example, there are many different resistor types (metal film, metal oxide film, carbon film, and carbon composition), inductor types(inductor wound coil and coil bead), capacitor types (ceramic disc, metal oxide capacitor), and capacitor (polyester film capacitor), etc.
7. It easy to use and understand
The passive circuit uses symbols that are easy to understand and use. The symbols of the passive circuit component are represented by Ps, such as Ps1, Ps2, Ps3, etc.
