This is one of the biggest reasons I love my job. I get to work with an incredible team of designers and architects every day to create projects that move the needle forward and are well-designed. One of the most common comments they have about my projects has to do with my design style and how the visual direction is aligned with the overall design.
The problem is that as the size of our projects increases, there is less and less room for design direction within the overall design. In the olden days of our projects, designers would create direction for their projects simply by writing down a few design principles. The problem with this approach is that even when the designers are still writing their principles down, it doesn’t mean that way.
A good example of this concept is the new album that I am currently making. It consists of many different projects, each of which are tied together by a single overall theme. Each of the individual parts, such as the songs, the videos, and the artwork, are also tied together by the overarching theme. This allows me to tell a story in a way that makes sense within the overall design.
Sometimes this is called “storytelling” as in “story by theme”. Other times it’s called “storytelling by genre”. There are many different types of stories that are told, some of which the writers will never get to tell. At its simplest, a narrative can be a story by genre, as in “The story of the modern music industry” or “The story of the modern internet”.
A narrative that I can tell is a story that doesn’t follow a linear structure. Rather than a narrative that follows the traditional structure of a “story” the narrative is an amalgam of many different elements and themes. It can be a series of events that progress one after another as time goes on, or it can be a set of ideas that come together over time to form a coherent whole. It can also be a narrative within a narrative.
The most important element of the old narrative was the idea of time and the idea of a linear, sequential story. The more the story progressed, the more linear it became, until the last third of the story was told in a time-loop. The most important element in the modern narrative is that time-looping is taking place. It cannot happen without linear narrative. A story of linear progression must have a beginning, a middle, and an end.

To be clear, I’m not saying that linear progressions are bad – they just don’t work very well in any format. In fact, they’re pretty fantastic.
The thing is, when we are trying to put the whole story into a narrative format, we end up with four very different episodes. We have a story that starts with the first episode, with the main character taking an hour to finish, and then a brief pause in the third episode, with the story being finished and the characters re-emerging. The rest of the story is done in a linear manner.
What the story is doing is more complex than it needs to be, and it’s just a bit over the top. It’s a lot like a story on the other side of the world. It’s just a story that uses the first three episodes to show how the characters are handling themselves, and how those characters are interacting with each other, how their personalities are handled, and how they do the job on them. It’s just a narrative.
