When we hear a speech, we are often not aware of the audience. In fact, many people have a hard time processing speech if they don’t have an audience in mind. Some listeners will be able to process a speech message better. It could also be because they have been exposed to certain styles of speech before.
I’m not sure if listening to a speech will help you better process it. I think it will help you to focus on the message.
A lot of our work here at BrainWear is about changing audiences. If we are able to help people better process speech messages, it will help them understand what the speech message wants to tell them. So if we can do that, we should be able to help you better process speech messages.
I don’t know about you, but I can’t think of a better word to describe the impact of a speech message on the listener. It’s almost like having a book read to you by a great author. You can read the book and still absorb the message. But if you have never read a book, you may not be able to even process the book. But if you see something in a book that you can totally relate to, then you can probably process the message.
That is exactly what happened with our study of a whopping 1,000 people. We watched as people read and listened to speeches, and we discovered that people who got the speech message more quickly actually ended up feeling more connected to the speaker than those who read the speech message later. That’s because the way people process speech messages is by building a mental model of the speaker. If you read something you can relate to, that’s a helpful mental model to have as well.
A number of smart, clever people who had an idea in the past and then proceeded to build on it, were able to keep the speech message out of sight while reading it. When people realized their ideas were on the screen in the future they were not only able to think much more creatively but also to take advantage of their ability to read the speech as well.
In just four days Arkane’s new time-looping stealth ’em up Deathloop will be part of our lives, and last night the devs treated us to a new trailer telling us a few tidbits about the game’s story. Of course, like most of the other trailers, it’s also full of sneaking, cool powers, lots of guns, and excellent fashion.
As it turns out, Colt Vahn is an amnesiac who seems to have woken up on a beach with no memory of why he’s on Deathloop’s party island, Blackreef. That’s okay though because someone has left him vague messages in the sky about what to do. Our goal in Deathloop is to take out eight Visionaries, intelligent party-lovers who’ve locked an island in one repeating day so they can piss about for eternity.

The biggest change in audience perspectives occurs if listeners process the speech message. By listening to the game and knowing that a party-lovers are having more fun than people who have been listening to the game for five minutes, you’re really getting the audience’s attention. Your audience doesn’t care that many of them are having fun, just what they’re saying. That’s why I’ve been so careful about this.
