Are you having a problem with your windows 10 locks up when idle? If so, you’re not alone. Windows 10 has been known to lock up when it idles for an extended period. This can be frustrating, especially if the computer is in use while it’s happening. There are simple steps that you can take to try and fix this problem without much trouble at all!
Update your graphics card drivers:
When a computer locks up while idle, the issue may be caused by an outdated driver. The first step to solving this problem should be updating the current version of your graphics cards with the newest one available. This will ensure that you are using a newer and more reliable software from what windows update would have offered.
Disable the windows sleep function:
If you don’t want your computer to go into idle mode and there’s no other reason for it to do so, then disabling the window’s sleep function will prevent this from happening. Simply open up the settings menu on your pc and disable “allow my device to put itself in power saving mode”. You can also set a timer if desired that will close out of applications after an excessive amount of time has passed with no input or activity detected on screen.
Turn off hibernation:
Hibernate is another feature that may cause locks ups when idling; however, turning it off won’t be necessary unless Windows Update prompts you about it automatically while updating drivers. To turn hibernation off, follow the same steps as before and set “allow my device to put itself in a power-saving mode” to “Never”.
Disable windows update:
Turnoffs Windows Update can be done in two ways. The first is by going into settings > windows updates & security > change active hours so that you don’t want your computer updating outside of those times. Next, go back out to Settings and select ‘advanced options’ on the left pane where it’ll show under ‘when we do this for me:’ Change how often I get new features from Microsoft (recommended) to Never turn on automatic updates.
Check battery life:
Make sure your laptop has enough juice; if not plug it up or find a charger nearby.
Disable Cortana:
Press the Windows key + R to open up a run command. Type services.MSc and press enter which should bring up a list of running services on your computer, then scroll down until you see Cortana or right-click it and choose “stop”. This will disable Cortana but if you want to re-enable it at any time just go back into task manager and select start instead of stop.”
Disable Windows Defender:
Open settings > Update & Security > Windows defender. Under “Turn windows features on or off”, uncheck the box for Virus protection and click save.
Open the start menu and type windows update. Press enter to open up your list of available updates. Right click on it and choose “Hide this update” then scroll down until you see another one that says “Change settings”. Click on change settings, then choose how often you want to install new updates (every day, every week or never). This will ensure no more automatic downloads.”
Change power plan setting:
Open Power Options from Control Panel > Select a different power plan set as battery saver mode for when laptop is inactive for longer periods of time. Switch back when needed by following same process but choosing a higher performance level instead.”
Get rid of unnecessary apps:
Open File Explorer and right click on the app you want to uninstall. Next, hit Uninstall.”
Additional Troubleshooting Tips
Restart laptop: “You can also try restarting your computer if it’s been running for a while without refreshing anything. This may clear out any processes that are just sitting around in memory or have built up over time.”
Switch antivirus software: “If none of these work then maybe consider switching your antivirus program (or at least doing an update check) as this might be what is interfering with Windows Update’s ability to install updates correctly.”
