To Here Knows When is a popular song by the British rock band Led Zeppelin. It was released in 1972 and became their most successful US single, peaking at number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The lyrics to this song are based on two traditional English folk songs: “The Unquiet Grave” (also known as “Loony Doon”) and “Down By Yon River Side.”
The first line of the song is a reference to “Loony Doon” and it’s original lyrics. It reads, “There’s too much pressure down there by your feet / And I know that you need someone just like me.” The last two lines are from “Down By Yon River Side,” which read: “And so we went to roam in this land unknown/We found an open stream with water flowing free”. These specific references can be seen as subtle hints at death or rebirth.
In the penultimate verse, Robert Plant sings about not being able to go back home again while he follows his wayward son (Robert). This reflects on how Jimmy Page was following around his father who did not want to be near him.
The second verse is telling the story of how Robert Plant talks about an eagle who cannot fly and he realizes that it’s not his wings, but rather a different creature that has stopped him from flying. This line “Here in my hand, I hold your golden chain” signifies how Jimmy Page can’t find closure with past events because they are still haunting him through thoughts and images. The third verse describes Lizzy as being someone who took care of her father for many years while she was young so when life got tough later on she could take good care of herself again. This reflects back to what Jimmy said earlier about taking care of himself even though other people don’t think he should always worry about himself.
The lyrics are composed by Led Zeppelin and Robert Plant.*

To Here Knows When is a song written by Led Zeppelin and Robert Plant. The song was released on the album Led Zeppelin IV in 1971.*
To Here Knows When is a very meaningful song to me because it touches on themes of feeling lost, not being able to find oneself, but then finding hope through love. I think that sometimes when we are so busy with everything else going on in life such as work or school we forget about ourselves and who we really are; this can lead to feelings of isolation. This song reminds us that no matter what happens, there will always be somebody out there for you – someone that loves you unconditionally like Lizzy’s father loved her!*
The lyrics from this song speak volumes to me because they remind me how important it is to love yourself and to remember that you are not alone. This song is a message of hope for those who have lost themselves in all the other distractions.*
The music video for this song was directed by Academy Award-winning director John Seamus O’Sullivan, which can be seen on YouTube with lyrics displayed above it. It features shots from both Ireland and England as well as Lizzy’s father reading a letter to her while she goes through old photographs. The scene then changes to show Lizzy driving down an empty road where we see various scenes pass by such as couples embracing each other or children playing outside.*
